Making money online is not as easy as some make it seem. If you listen to all the get-rich-quick schemes circulated online, you’d think you’d be making money in no time. The truth of the matter is that it’s just not that simple. I can tell you there are ways to make money online. They are real, they are true, and they work. The key is the time you have to put into making them work. Here’s a list of some of the best ideas. If you’re building your own website, a certain level of web development skills are required. It might be a good idea to find someone who can help get things set up for you if you’re a novice:
- 1. Start an online store: If you don’t mind spending a little money upfront to get started, you can create an online store. The best way to do this is to build a website with a program like WordPress, and install an e-commerce plugin such as WooCommerce to allow you to create products and list them on a “Store” or “Shop” page on your website. At this point, you are probably thinking, “What am I going to sell?”. You have several options, so here’s a brief explanation of each:
- Selling your products: If you are handy at making things like crafts, woodwork, or knitting, you can easily put these skills to good use and sell your products in your store. You’d have to contend with things like inventory, shipping, and customer service, but your profits would be 100% your own (besides the portion the tax person will want).
- Sell digital products: You can create e-books, video or live lessons (such as guitar or tutoring), or courses and sell them on your website
- Sell used items: you can sell gently used clothing or other things you’ve purchased from the marketplace on Facebook or at garage sales.
- Sell old cellphone or other technology
- 2. Start a dropshipping business: The best part about dropshipping is that you don’t have to handle inventory or ship out goods. This is all handled by the dropshipping company. This method involves the following:
- Start a website with WordPress and WooCommerce, and then connect WooCommerce with a dropshipping website such as Aliexpress. You’ll be able to import products (that you get to pick) from Aliexpress into WooCommerce. Each item will be listed on your “Shop” or “Store” page. There are detailed instructions you’ll have to follow, either supplied by the dropshipping company or by researching it online yourself. Do your research, and you’ll find out exactly what needs to be installed on your website to make things work. Often, additional plugins or programs, and/or specific setting adjustments are required. Other items to consider are setting prices to turn a profit, as well as setting proper shipping charges.
- 3. Start a Print-On-Demand Merchandise Store: There are many companies offering print-on-demand services. With these companies, you get to create your own designs, logos, or artwork, and the company will print them on clothing. You will need high resolution images to upload to make this work properly. There are typically many products, from mugs and keychains to all types of clothing. Again, there are specific instructions on how to set this up. There are at least two methods to get started:
- Use a 3rd party e-commerce website: Print-on-demand companies such as Printful, will allow you to connect your products to a 3rd party e-commerce website such as Ecwid by Ligthspeed, that will provide you with a storefront to sell your items, for free or for a monthly fee.
- Start a website with WordPress and WooCommerce and then connect WooCommerce to the print-on-demand service such as Printful directly. This method doesn’t require a 3rd party e-commerce company. You’ll be providing your own storefront on your website with WooCommerce. As mentioned above, there are specific instructions you’ll have to find and follow to set this up properly.
- 4. Start a blog: If you enjoy writing like I do, you can start your own blog website. Getting started can cost you absolutely nothing by using websites such as Blogger or WordPress. Using these options is more straight-forward than building a website from scratch. They provide pre-built website templates that you can choose from. You’ll have to do your research to figure out how things work, but I believe anyone can do it. You can monetize your blog with ads (such as using Adsense) or donations.
- 5. Sell services online: Sell your services online on your blog or website. These can include any of the following, and you don’t necessarily have to be an expert in any of them:
- Proofreading
- Website Development
- Virtual Assistant
- Content Writing
- 6. Website reviews: You can sign up with companies such as Usertesting, which will pay you $10 to review a website and record yourself doing it. This is one of the most lucrative services I’ve used as they pay $10 per website review. A typical review can take 10-20 minutes. Other typical work such as filling out surveys, only pays pennies and is not worth it.
- 7. Freelance work: If you don’t have a website or blog, you can sign up at websites such as Upwork, Fiverr or Freelancer, and sell your services on their platforms.
- 8. Sell digital photos: You can take photos and sell them on stock photo websites such as Shutterstock.
- 9. Affiliate marketing: You can get paid to promote a company’s product or service.
- 10. Become an Amazon Associate: Sign up to create a link and place it on your website or blog. You earn money when people click on your associate link and purchase items on Amazon. You can also share the link on social media, or in distribution emails.
There you have it! These are some of the more popular methods people are using to earn money online. There are many more, I’m sure. If you come across any that you’d like to share, by all means, comment on this post or contact me directly and let me know.
